Engaging young people in meaningful service experiences teaches them valuable life lessons about contributing to others. Service-learning can involve a variety
of family, school, or community projects where young people make a
positive difference in others' lives and identify connections to the
academic program. The WiseSkills character education program embeds service-learning into the elementary, middle, and high school curricula by providing teachers with practical suggestions for simple projects that directly connect to each schoolwide Character Theme. In addition, Family Wisdom gives families exciting ideas for getting involved in service opportunities in their local community. All of the WiseSkills service-learning resources help Character Counts! schools involve students in projects that apply the Six Pillars of Character
To help schools arrange ongoing service projects, the Community Component includes resources and training that equip parent volunteers to arrange service projects for classrooms. Service projects can include:
• Local environmental and beautification projects • Building relationships with nursing home residents • Raising funds for a local or global project • Working with a local museum • Helping provide food to the needy in the community
