The WiseSkillsCommunity Component is a wonderful way to train and equip parent volunteers to involve local businesses and organizations in a school's character education initiative. The Community Component can also be implemented in conjunction with Character Counts! to teach the Six Pillars of Character. A small group of parent volunteers are trained using the Community Training CD, where they gain practical strategies for arranging two
ongoing activities at school:
• Guest Career Speakers Speakers share about their careers and how they demonstrate good character to find success at work and in their personal lives.
• Community Service Projects Meaningful opportunities for students to contribute to their community and apply the character qualties they are learning. The WiseSkillsK-12 curricula includes practical ideas for service projects for each monthly Character Theme.
Each Volunteer Community Coordinator is provided with the Community Connections Kit, which features resources to help them arrange these community activities throughout the year. The Community Implementation Kit provides everything needed to train parent volunteers and involve your community in cultivating character in students. For schools already using the Six Pillars of Character, the Community Component helps engage local businesses and organizations in their Character Counts! initiative.
